COVID-19: A MESSAGE FROM THE MASTER
Crisis tests community. Aiming to counter the threat posed by COVID-19 the College has hunkered down. In the face of these extraordinary measures, there is much deserving of praise. I remain impressed with the College: its degree of cooperation; its sense of collective purpose; its determination that the most vulnerable amongst us should be protected by the responsible actions of all; and its resilience in the face of the significant disruption to our lives demanded by the fight against COVID-19 – a kind of war against an unseen and insidious enemy.
As might be expected, the College is exercising an abundance of care in looking after students, staff and Fellows. The small number of students unable to leave Cambridge remain in College accommodation (with daily provision of “take-away” food from the kitchens and continuing tutorial and pastoral oversight). The University has announced that there will be no face-to-face teaching next term, and no examinations. I expect that the overwhelming majority of students who have already left Cambridge will not be coming back into residence this Easter Term. I am confident that the College will respond swiftly and appropriately to the needs of those graduating (likely without the pomp and circumstance of General Admission), of those continuing, and of those to be admitted (without sitting final school examinations).
